Google Brings Spam Control to The People.

By

Have you ever Googled something, could be anything, and most of the top results that come back are sites with very little, low quality content, on pages covered with Adsense or some other kind of ads? Or worse, there is no content, it’s just a page of links with ads?  Of course you have, because marketers are good at getting their sites to the top of the search results.  That is good for their bank accounts, but bad for the rest of us who are looking for real, quality information.  With Google’s new spam blocker feature, you can now add any sites that you don’t ever want to see again to a list of blocked sites, and just like that POOF, they’re gone for good.  No matter what the offending site is, if you don’t want to see anything from that domain again, just add it to the list and no more porn, content farm, ad farm, no quality, crappy results.  YAY!   Nothing irritates me more when I’m searching for something than to click on a link that looks like it will have just the information I’m looking for, only to find it’s nothing more than a couple of pages of poorly-written, ad saturated garbage.

Generally, I think Google’s new algorithm for weeding out content farms have done a pretty good job in lowering the number of garbage results, but they are still out there.  For instance, a simple search for “train your dog” brings up sites that are mostly legit and probably useful, but then there’s this one “trainpuppydog.com”.  It’s a 3-page site, with very basic information, and lots of ads.  Typical basic marketing niche site.  Now, whenever a result I don’t like comes up, I can click on the “Block all “whatever.com” results” confirm my choice, and I’ll never see it again, unless I choose to unblock it, or unless I’m not signed in under my account.  Your block list is tied to your Google Account, so if you surf using someone else’s computer, or aren’t signed in while you search, you may still see sites you had blocked.

Since the feature doesn’t seem to be working yet in my browser, maybe I’m on tomorrow’s list, I had to borrow this image from Google’s Blog, but this is what the option will look like.
